Belize City; 18th June 2023

Today, with great pride, 130 members of the Belize Defence Force (BDF) and the Belize Coast Guard (BCG) returned to Belize from their extensive training program at the prestigious Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) in New Orleans, Louisiana. The training, spanning a month, aimed at equipping these dedicated servicemen and women with essential skills and knowledge to enhance their capabilities in various disciplines.

The intensive training program covered a wide range of crucial disciplines, ensuring a comprehensive skill set for the troops. In the area of small unit tactics, soldiers underwent rigorous training exercises focused on team coordination, maneuvering techniques, and strategic decision-making. Through simulated scenarios and real-life simulations, they were able to sharpen their combat skills and adaptability in dynamic environments.

To bolster their navigational proficiency, troops also received extensive training in map reading. They acquired a deep understanding of topographical maps, compass navigation, and orienteering techniques. These skills will prove invaluable in accurately assessing terrain and successfully planning and executing military operations.

Communication is of utmost importance in any military operation, and the troops benefited from an intensive course in signals. They mastered various methods of communication, including encrypted radio transmissions, hand signals, and flag semaphore. This training ensures seamless coordination and effective communication between units, even in challenging circumstances.

Recognizing the critical role of medical support in the field, the troops participated in an advanced medical training program. They received comprehensive instruction in emergency first aid, trauma care, and casualty evacuation techniques. Armed with these life-saving skills, they are now better equipped to handle medical emergencies and provide immediate care to injured personnel.

Patrol discipline was another key aspect emphasized during the training. Troops learned the importance of maintaining situational awareness, stealth, and discipline during patrol operations. They were trained in techniques to minimize detection, gather intelligence, and secure areas of strategic importance. Such skills are vital for effective border control and counterinsurgency operations.

Physical fitness forms the foundation of any successful military force, and the training program dedicated significant attention to this aspect. Troops engaged in rigorous physical training routines, including strength and endurance exercises, obstacle courses, and combat fitness drills. This emphasis on physical fitness ensures that the troops are in optimal shape, capable of enduring demanding tasks and maintaining peak performance in the field.

Lastly, the training program placed great emphasis on advanced leadership development. Recognizing that effective leadership is paramount to a cohesive and successful unit, aspiring leaders underwent specialized training modules. They learned essential leadership principles, decision-making strategies, and effective communication techniques to lead their teams with confidence and proficiency.

The BDF and the participating members extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Louisiana Army National Guard for their invaluable support and continuous commitment. The success of this training program signifies the unwavering dedication of the BDF to continually enhance the knowledge and capabilities of its members. By investing in comprehensive and diverse training, the BDF remains at the forefront of military preparedness, ready to safeguard the security and sovereignty of Belize.
