As of March 2023, Belize has not indicated any plans to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China. The Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa, has stated that Belize continues to enjoy a healthy and productive relationship with Taiwan and that they are friends and allies. He also mentioned that discussions about switching alliances are not taking place with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is understandable that Honduras' decision to switch alliances was motivated by debt and pragmatism, as stated by their foreign minister. However, it is ultimately up to each country to decide which diplomatic relations to maintain based on their own interests and values.
It remains to be seen whether other countries in the region will follow Honduras' lead and switch their allegiance from Taiwan to China. Belize, Guatemala, and Paraguay are currently the only countries on the American mainland that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
However, over the past few years, several Latin American and Caribbean nations have chosen to recognize the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China, while cutting off diplomatic ties with Taiwan. This shift in allegiance can be attributed to a variety of factors.
One major reason for this change is China's rapidly growing economy and its increasing investment in Latin America and the Caribbean. By building economic ties with China, these countries hope to benefit from the financial assistance and loans that China has offered to the region. Additionally, China has become a major trading partner for many countries in the area, and recognizing China could help them to boost exports and attract further investment.
China has also been using its economic clout to put pressure on countries to sever ties with Taiwan and recognize the One-China Policy. As a result, many nations in the region have been persuaded to switch their allegiance to China in order to maintain access to Chinese investment and avoid diplomatic isolation.
Beyond these economic considerations, there are also political and strategic factors at play. For some nations, recognizing China may be seen as a way to gain leverage in their relationships with the United States, which has traditionally been a dominant player in the region. Others may be seeking to align themselves with other countries in the area that have already recognized China, in order to build closer ties with those nations and benefit from their relationships with China.
In addition to these reasons, China's global leadership in technology has become increasingly attractive to nations in the region. By recognizing China, these countries may hope to gain access to Chinese expertise and technology in areas such as 5G networks, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence.
Finally, some nations in the region may see aligning themselves with China as a way to distance themselves from the United States and align more closely with China's foreign policy objectives and priorities, such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the goal of establishing a multipolar world order.
Overall, the decision to recognize China and sever ties with Taiwan is a complex one that involves a range of economic, political, and strategic considerations. While some countries have chosen to make this shift in allegiance, others have maintained their relationships with Taiwan, highlighting the ongoing debate over Taiwan's place in the international community.
