Pre-Schooler Killed By Drunk-Driver
Belize City: Wednesday 4th Dec. 2013
The City of Belize has expressed outrage after the senseless killing of a 4 year old pre-schooler by a drunk driver.
Little Jahston Terry of Building Blocks Pre-School was walking with his 9 old brother Jaheem on the side-walk on Cemetry Road on the opposite side of Constitution Park shortly before 4:00 pm on Wednesday when a white FORD van travelling towards the Pound Yard Bridge lost control and slammed on to the side walk knocking down a traffic sign then hitting both brothers.
Little Jahston died on the spot after the vehicle ran over his head while his older brother sustained injuries and was rushed to the KHMH for treatment. When Police investigators arrived at the scene and inspected inside the Van, they discovered empty Belikin bottles on the bottle holders attached between the 2 front seats.
The driver of the van has since been identified as 36 year old Hubert Martinez Jr., a civilian driver employed with the Belize Defense Force (BDF).
He has been charged with 5 traffic violations and was arraigned in Court on Thursday appearing before Magistrate Hettie Mae Stuart.
Martinez was charged with: 1) manslaughter by negligence, 2). Drove motor vehicle without due care and attention, 3). Causing death by careless conduct, 4). Drove motor vehicle with alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit and 5). With Negligent wounding.
Magistrate Stuart did not take a plea from him because the offences are indictable. She also denied him bail and remanded him into custody until January 7, 2014.
